8 Double-Click Tricks in Microsoft Word

While using keyboard shortcuts is a sure-fire way to speed up your computing, most users get comfortable with the mouse and find it hard to switch. If you’re one of those users, hopefully you are taking full advantage of the ways you can use you mouse to shortcut certain functions.

You probably know about some basic double-clicks in Microsoft Word. For example, double-clicking a word selects it and double-clicking to the left of a paragraph selects the entire paragraph. Did you know that by double-clicking your mouse you can open dialogue boxes?

  1. Double-click on a tab in the ruler bar and Word opens the Tabs dialogue, where you can adjust tab settings.
  2. You can double-click any of the symbols at the left or right end of the ruler bar and Word opens the Paragraph dialogue, where you can change the indents and spacing options.
  3. On the ruler bar, to the left of the indent objects, is a dark gray area, marking the left margin. Double-click in that area to open the Page Setup dialogue, where you can adjust the margins, change the page orientation, choose the paper type, and specify header and footer settings.
  4. At the bottom of the Word window, in the status bar, are several buttons. Double-click on REC to open the macro recorder and begin recording your keystrokes and menu choices. Double-click on TRK to toggle Word’s Track Changes features. Double-click on EXT to toggle the Extend Selection mode. Double-click the OVR button to switch between over-type and insert mode.
  5. Double-click a number or bullet in a list and you’ll see the Bullets and Numbering dialogue.
  6. Start the spell-checker by double-clicking on the spell-check button in the status bar (it looks like an open book with an “X” on the right-hand page).
  7. Double-click a WordArt object and you can edit the object.
  8. Double-click a footnote or endnote number in the text area of your document and Word moves you to the footnote/endnote text itself and double-clicking on the footnote/endnote number in the footnote/endnote area returns you to the location of that note in the document.
